Cadillac Catera
Reaching for younger customers, Cadillac introduces the Catera a sporty, small-ish (by Cadillac standards) luxury car with dimensions similar to those on the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Lexus GS300. The Catera is based entirely on the Opel Omega, which was introduced in Europe. And to further complicate its origin the Catera’s engine is the same 3.0-liter V6 found in the Saab 9000. In U.S.-spec Catera form, this engine makes 200 hp and 192 pound-feet of torque.
Mercedes-Benz AAV
Realizing the importance of having a sport-utility vehicle in showrooms, Mercedes-Benz introduces the AAV, or “All-Activity Vehicle.” Available with either a V-6 or V-8, the AAV is scheduled for debut in fall. It will be built in a new plant in Alabama, with 65,000 units produced annually for distribution in the United States and overseas. It will have dual airbags, plus airbags in both front doors.
